About Doctor

Meet Dr. Bhaba Nanda Das

Dr. Bhaba Nanda Das is one of the most famous and respected heart surgeons in India. He is a doctor who has spent his entire life saving thousands of hearts. Many people call him the best cardiothoracic surgeon in the country.

Currently, Dr. Das serves as the Chief Cardiac Surgeon (CTVS) at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. He is also the founder of Health City Hospital in Guwahati. Throughout his long career, he has performed more than 20,000 to 25,000 successful heart surgeries. This is a huge number that shows his great skill and dedication.

Dr. Das is known as a "pioneer." This means he was one of the first doctors to start new and better ways to fix the heart in India. He was the doctor who performed the first-ever heart transplant in India. He also introduced modern surgeries for the main blood tube of the heart (aorta) in North India.

Patients trust Dr. Das because he is very calm and expert in his work. He knows that heart surgery is a very big step for a family. He talks to his patients in simple words and listens to their fears. His goal is to provide the safest care so that patients can return to a healthy life.

Education and Training

Dr. Bhaba Nanda Das studied at the very best medical colleges in India. He completed his MBBS from the University of Gauhati in 1977. Because he wanted to be a surgeon, he went to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for his MS in Surgery.

To reach the highest level of heart care, he earned his MCh in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery from AIIMS, New Delhi in 1983. AIIMS is the top medical institute in India, and his training there made him an expert in complex surgeries.

Dr. Das also wanted to learn from the rest of the world. He received two very prestigious fellowships:

  1. WHO Fellowship (1993): To learn global medical standards.
  2. Commonwealth Fellowship (1994): To study advanced heart techniques.

This strong education helps him handle even the most difficult heart cases with confidence.

A Pioneer in Beating Heart Surgery

Bypass surgery (CABG) is used when the blood tubes of the heart are blocked. In the past, doctors had to stop the heart and use a machine to breathe for the patient during surgery.

Dr. Bhaba Nanda Das is a pioneer of Beating Heart CABG in India.

  • In this surgery, the heart is not stopped. It keeps beating while the doctor fixes the tubes.
  •
  • Why is this better?
  • It is much safer for the patient.
  • Patients recover much faster and feel less stress on their bodies.
  • More than 95% of the surgeries done by his team at Apollo are beating heart surgeries.

The First Heart Transplant in India

One of the biggest achievements in Indian medical history belongs to Dr. Das. He was a key part of the team that performed the first-ever successful heart transplant in India.

A heart transplant is a very complex surgery where a sick heart is replaced with a healthy heart from a donor. By doing this surgery, Dr. Das gave hope to many people whose hearts were failing. Today, he is still considered a leading authority on heart transplants and artificial heart devices (LVAD).

Expert in Aortic Aneurysm Surgery

The aorta is the largest blood tube in the human body. Sometimes, this tube can develop a bulge, which is called an "aneurysm." If it bursts, it is very dangerous.

Dr. Bhaba Nanda Das was the first doctor to start Aneurysm Surgery in North India. He uses advanced methods to fix these bulges and save lives. He also performs the "Bentall Procedure," which fixes both the aortic tube and the heart valve at the same time.

Heart Valve Repair and Replacement

The heart has small "doors" called valves that control the flow of blood. If these valves leak or become too tight, the heart cannot work properly. Dr. Das is a master at:

  • Mitral Valve Replacement: Fixing the valve on the left side of the heart.
  • Aortic Valve Replacement: Fixing the main valve that sends blood to the body.
  • Double Valve Replacement: Replacing two valves in one operation.

He always tries to repair the valve first. If it cannot be fixed, he uses high-quality artificial valves to help the patient live a long life.

Helping Children with Heart Problems

Dr. Das also helps little children who are born with heart defects. This is called Congenital Heart Surgery. Some babies are born with holes in their heart or blood tubes that are connected the wrong way.

Dr. Das performs:

  • VSD and ASD Closure: Fixing holes in the heart walls.
  • Arterial Switch Surgery: Fixing mixed-up blood tubes.
  • Glenn and Ross Procedures: Complex surgeries for children's hearts.

He understands that operating on a child requires very steady hands and a soft heart. He has helped thousands of babies grow up to be healthy adults.

Experience at AIIMS and Apollo

Before joining Apollo Hospital, Dr. Das worked at AIIMS, New Delhi, for 12 years (1984 to 1996). He was a Senior Consultant and teacher there.

In 1996, he joined Indraprastha Apollo Hospital as the Head of the Department. He founded the heart surgery unit there. Today, Apollo Delhi is one of the top 6 heart institutes in the entire world. Dr. Das and his team perform around 800 heart cases every year, making them one of the most experienced teams in Asia.

Awards and National Honors

Because of his incredible work, Dr. Das has received many honors.

  • Vasistha Chikitsa Ratan Award (2012): Given by the Delhi Medical Association for his excellent service.
  • Limca Book of Records: He is recognized for his high volume of successful surgeries.
