About Doctor

Meet Dr. Mohit Sharma

Dr. Mohit Sharma is a highly skilled doctor who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is a Professor and a leader in his field. Dr. Sharma is famous for solving very difficult medical problems using advanced "microvascular" techniques. This means he uses special tools to fix tiny blood vessels and nerves.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Sharma has been serving patients at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, Kerala. Before this, he completed his advanced training at the famous Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. He is known for his steady hands and his passion for helping patients regain their normal life after accidents or illnesses.

Dr. Mohit Sharma is part of a very special team. In 2015, his team started the first Hand Transplantation program in India. Today, they have some of the largest experience in the world for hand transplants. Whether it is a baby born with a facial defect or an adult who lost a limb in an accident, Dr. Sharma provides expert care with a kind heart.

He believes in teaching and sharing knowledge. He creates high-quality medical videos to train other surgeons. His goal is to make sure every patient receives the best possible treatment using the latest science.

Education and Global Training

Dr. Mohit Sharma has a very strong academic background. He began his medical journey at SMS Medical College in Jaipur, where he completed his MBBS and MS in General Surgery.

To become a specialist, he moved to New Delhi. He earned his MCh in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from Safdarjung Hospital in 2002. Safdarjung is one of the busiest hospitals in India, which gave him vast experience in handling complex cases.

Dr. Sharma also wanted to learn from the best in the world. He traveled to the United Kingdom for advanced training.

He completed two prestigious clinical fellowships:

  1. Hand Surgery Fellowship: At St. Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery, UK.
  2. Burns Fellowship: At St. Andrew’s Centre, which is the largest burns unit in the UK.

This international training helped him bring world-class surgical methods back to India.

A Pioneer in Hand Transplantation

Dr. Mohit Sharma is a world leader in Vascularised Composite Allotransplantation (VCA). This is a complex medical term for organ transplants that involve skin, bone, and muscle—most commonly Hand Transplantation.

In 2015, his team made history by starting the first hand transplant program in India. Since then, he has helped many people who had lost their hands in accidents. His center in Kochi is now one of the top centers in the world for this surgery.

He performs:

  • Bilateral (both) hand transplants.
  • Proximal forearm transplants.
  • Supracondylar (upper arm) transplants.

His work gives people a second chance to use their hands for daily tasks, work, and life.

Expert in Hand and Upper Limb Surgery

Aside from transplants, Dr. Sharma is an expert in treating all types of hand injuries and problems. The hand is a very complex part of the body with many small bones and nerves.

His hand surgery services include:

  • Trauma Care: Fixing broken bones and soft tissue injuries.
  • Replantation: Rejoining fingers or hands that have been completely cut off in accidents.
  • Birth Defects: Fixing hands that were not formed correctly before birth.
  • Brachial Plexus Surgery: Repairing nerves that control the arm and hand.
  • Post-Burn Care: Fixing hands that cannot move properly due to old burn scars.

Ear Reconstruction (Microtia)

Some children are born with a small or missing ear. This condition is called Microtia. It can affect a child’s hearing and their confidence.

Dr. Mohit Sharma is a specialist in building new ears. He uses the child’s own rib cartilage to carve a new ear frame. This is a very artistic and precise surgery. He has published research on how to improve the look and shape of these new ears so they look very natural.

Facial Reanimation and Rhinoplasty

If a person’s face is paralyzed due to Bell’s palsy, accidents, or surgery, they cannot smile or close their eyes properly. Dr. Sharma performs Facial Reanimation to bring movement back to the face.

He also specializes in:

  • Rhinoplasty: Reshaping the nose for better breathing or appearance.
  • Nasal Reconstruction: Rebuilding the nose after cancer or injury.
  • Cleft Lip and Palate: Fixing birth defects in the lip and roof of the mouth.

Diabetic Foot Reconstruction

India has a very high number of diabetic patients. Many suffer from foot ulcers that do not heal. This can sometimes lead to amputation (losing the foot).

Dr. Mohit Sharma works hard to save the foot. He uses "Flap Surgeries" to cover open wounds. He also performs tendon rebalancing to help the foot walk better. His goal is "Limb Salvage," which means saving the limb so the patient can keep walking.

Lymphedema Surgery

Lymphedema causes heavy swelling in the arms or legs. It often happens after cancer treatment. It can be very painful and make daily life difficult.

Dr. Sharma uses ultra-modern micro-surgeries to treat this:

  • Vascularised Lymph Node Transfer: Moving healthy lymph nodes to the swollen area.
  • Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis: Connecting tiny lymph tubes to veins to drain the fluid.
  • Reduction Surgeries: Removing excess swollen tissue.

Burns Management

Dr. Mohit Sharma is an expert in both acute and chronic burn care.

  • Acute Burns: Providing immediate life-saving care for fresh burn injuries.
  • Post-Burn Deformities: Using skin grafts and tissue expansion to fix tight scars that stop the body from moving.

His training in the UK's largest burns unit makes him one of the most experienced burn surgeons in India.

Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Mohit Sharma’s innovative work has been recognized many times at the national level. He is a multiple-time winner of the prestigious PEET Prize, which is the highest honor for "Ideas and Innovation" in Indian plastic surgery.

  • Peet Prize (2006): For innovative tongue reconstruction.
